Greg and I were playing Scrabble last night, which means we had the dictionary out. We don’t play by the official rules that include the ability to challenge your opponent on a word. Instead, we use the dictionary to check if a word we are thinking of is actually a word. We’re not allowed to peruse the dictionary, just look up specific words.
Anyway, after the game I was reading a few definitions in our brand new Concise Oxford English Dictionary, and I came across this term:
Belisha beacon: n. an orange ball containing a flashing light, mounted on a post at each end of a zebra crossing
Now, try incorporating that in every day conversation!
Wikipedia has some more information on the term. I didn’t even know they had zebras in the UK.
